Cambridge has long been famous for its large number of bicycles and cycling is still the preferred method of transport for many people. Information on the University’s cycle to work scheme, cycle discounts and cycle routes can be found in the Cycle section of Estate Management's web pages.
There are bus services throughout the city, although they tend to be less regular in some of the nearby villages. A park and ride scheme (which involves parking your car at a site outside the city centre and then catching a direct bus into Cambridge) operates from five locations.
The University part-funds the Uni 4 bus service, which runs from Madingley Road Park and Ride to Addenbrooke's Hospital Bus Station, via many University sites. Current members of the University can travel for a discounted fare of 50p per journey on the Uni 4 on presentation of their University Card.
The University has a limited number of free parking spaces. Demand far outweighs availability so the allocation of spaces is strictly controlled.
There is limited car parking in Cambridge and parking charges are comparatively high.
Cambridge railway station is in Station Road, which is approximately 20 minutes walk from the city centre.
London Kings Cross is around fifty minutes from Cambridge by train and direct services operate every fifteen minutes at peak times. Regular direct services also operate to London Liverpool Street, Birmingham, Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Ipswich, King's Lynn, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newmarket, Nottingham, Norwich, Peterborough and Sheffield. Train timetables are available from National Rail Enquiries.
It is recommended that you book train tickets in advance to access the cheapest possible fares. The CAMbens Discounts scheme offers University employees up to 3.5% cashback on train tickets bought from thetrainline.com.
As part of our environmental strategy for providing greener travel, the University offers a cycle to work scheme and a range of discounts on public transport. Those employees who need to drive to work also have access to a new fuel efficient employer provided car scheme, a car sharing scheme and discounts on short term car rental. Please see the Travel section of the CAMbens web pages for further information.
