Research Associate (Fixed Term)

We would like to appoint a postdoctoral researcher in seismology at the University of Cambridge. The focus of the project is on the structure and dynamics of the Iceland Plume and the North Atlantic region and the origin of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. The technical focus of this strand of the project is on seismic tomography that uses joint inversions of seismic waveforms and teleseismic travel times. The methods will be applied to the broadband data from a recently completed ocean-bottom deployment in the North Atlantic (www.sea-seis.ie), as well as other relevant data.

The successful candidate must have (or submitted and about to obtain) a PhD in seismology or a related field. We are looking for a candidate with substantial experience in computing, programming and seismic imaging. Experience with the development and application of software for the measurement of teleseismic delay times and for the tomographic inversion of the data is required. Experience of working with software that can handle the joint tomographic inversion of seismic waveforms and teleseismic travel times is desirable. The successful applicant will have good communication skills and be able to take up the appointment preferably by 1 January, 2025.

Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 (Grade 7). Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be under-appointed as a Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 - £32,982), moving to Research Associate (Grade 7) upon confirmation of their PhD award.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 April 2026 in the first instance.
